After the match my partner called an urgent team meeting to be held in the upstairs bar area. I begged off as I knew what the so-called meeting involved – shots in lieu of fines for being caught, bowled or run out. Nina however said that I had to join them as she and her business partner had an announcement to make and my company was required.
So I limped behind my teammates, gratefully grabbing onto the railing to aid me up the stairs – god I must’ve looked like an old woman! But in my defence, the groin muscle was starting to contract and if I learnt nothing last week, it was to keep the muscle limber and moving because once closed, it ain’t gonna open.
[side bar: is the Universe constantly injuring my groin muscle to ensure my legs stay shut? Is this an attempt to avoid temptation? Because it's really not necessary, I have no interest in any of my fellow players, and I haven't so much as looked in the direction of the cricketers playing in any of the other nets. Promise!]
As I finally reached the top of staircase, the door to the bar area was kindly opened for me by my ex-lover.
Stop. Rewind. What?
He looked more surprised to see me there than I was to see him, so I opened to bat.
Up on tip toes. Hug. Peck on cheek. Hot and sweaty.
Hey hey Harmony! What are you doing here?
I’m here to play, what else?
Don’t tell me you’re playing with them!
He pointed to Glass-Footed Chickie who’d walked through the door just before me. Strange how she was able to walk perfectly despite her apparent injury.
Yup, that’s my team.
Well no wonder you’re corrupted. Hahaha!
*Fake giggle* Ok well, see ya.
Now this is the part where I can either continue the story of what happened in the bar last night … or go back in time to clarify just who this mystery lover is.
I’ll go with the latter as I’m a firm believer in providing backstories and relevant history to any current events.
Just after moving into my complex fourteen years ago, I befriended another resident who was still living at home with his mommy. I knew his sister as we worked together when I was PR at a cosmetic and fragrance company; and when my car was stolen, she would give me a lift to and from work until the insurance paid me out to purchase a new vehicle. Oh and I also knew his mother, because surprise surprise, we worked together too.
Anyway, Gary was a wild young thing and he’d often come over in the evenings for drinks and we’d party up a storm together. [think Fabian – but without the drugs] Eventually one thing led to another, i.e. the amount of booze we were consuming increased substantially, and we ended up in bed together. Or rather the sleeper couch in the spare room, as I never actually permitted him in my bedroom, let alone my bed.
Whilst we were definitely not dating – we never went out together and we certainly didn’t harbour any romantic feelings for each other; we did enjoy each other’s company and the sex was
We had to keep our shenanigans under wrap though, as neither of us wanted to become complex gossip; and I also worked with his mother and his best friend absolutely hated my guts. I’m not dislike by many people, generally I am well-liked, but it seems when someone doesn’t like me, it is with an extremely intensity.
Nevertheless, we continued our little dalliances on a regular basis. After a few weeks he invited me to join him and his friends for a week holiday to Umhlanga. I wasn’t so sure about going, as that would change the dynamics of our arrangements; it would mean his mother knowing about us, and not to mention his best friend would be staying with us too; and I didn’t know the other friends. Argh.
A few days before we were due to leave, I took a lone walk around the complex in the evening and decided to lie on the grassed area around the visitors parking. Whilst parked off under the moon and stars a car parked in front of me and an unknown gentleman stepped out of the vehicle. He smiled at me and asked if I was enjoying the view. I had been lying on my back staring at the sky, but obviously sat up when I heard a car in my vicinity.
The next thing you know, he was sitting next to me and we began chatting like long lost friends. Midnight came and went and we remained on the grass, talking about everything under the
sun moon. There was a strong connection between us, and not just a physical attraction – in that short time we agreed that it felt like we had known each other for ages, instead of randomly bumping into each other in a parking bay.
He went back to his car to put in a CD for us to listen to – Savage Garden; and when I Knew I Loved You played, we just stared at each other with our hearts beating in unison. It was insane! And it was also the first time I believed in love at first sight. I was absolutely smitten.
We continued chatting, and he asked what I was doing in the holidays. I obviously wasn’t going to tell him about Gary *gulp* so I just mentioned that I was going away for a week with friends. He said he was also going on holiday to Durbs for a while and would like to see me on our mutual return.
We checked our dates and it turned out we’d be away for the same time – departing and arriving on the same day! We couldn’t believe the co-incidence. Another sign, we were sure. He then asked where I would be vacationing, and I told him I’d be his almost neighbour in Umhlanga. He almost woke the neighbours when he screamed that he too would be in Umhlanga – he just said Durban because that’s the nearest big city.
Wow! We couldn’t believe that we would both be on holiday in the same town at the same time, and so the plotting to get together during our holiday began.
By now the sun was coming up. We had spent the entire night sitting together on the grass talking, and not once had our hands even accidentally brushed each other. I had made up my mind, I was going to chat to Gary at a more appropriate hour and put an end to our sexcapades. I knew he’d still let me go with on holiday as I was paying my own way anyway, and the sex was just a sideline benefit of our friendship. I had now met The One and I wasn’t going to let anything get in the way!
He walked me home, and then I thought to ask what he was doing in the complex, as he obviously didn’t live there and whoever he was visiting clearly wasn’t concerned that he hadn’t made an appearance as no-one had come looking for him.
Oh I just wanted to come past to chat to my brother about our holiday. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go, but now that I know I’ll be seeing you there, I’m definitely on-board.
We said our reluctant good-byes with a promise of seeing each other later and I watched him walk away. With a big smile he waved at me, as he knocked on Gary’s front door.
